Fortunately, we’ve sifted through all the blockbusters and would- be blockbusters, the kung fu classics and the chop- socky wannabes, and come up with our list of the best action movies currently available on Netflix streaming. So put up your dukes, and give these films your best shot! Bad Boys IILots of people love Michael Bay’s Transformers movies, but really, we’re all just Bad Boys for life. Big Trouble in Little China is the story of a Chinese wizard who has taken up residence in San Francisco, who kidnaps two women in the hopes of making them his brides and breaking his centuries- old curse. It’s up to Russell and Dennis Dun to save the day, but despite his bravado, the stereotypical “badass” doesn’t make himself useful until the last possible minute, while all the residents of Little China save the day almost completely by themselves.

Inventive, funny, and full of amazing imagery, Big Trouble in Little China is one of the best action movies of the 1. Braveheart. Mel Gibson’s handsome period piece may be an Academy Award- winning Best Picture, packed with classy costume design and epic romance, but it’s also one of the most violent Oscar winners on record. The story of Scottish warrior William Wallace (Mel Gibson, who also directed) is a saga of tragedy and honor, spiked with gory and spectacular battle sequences that are still the template on which similar medieval epics, like The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones, are still based. Braveheart may be a terrible history lesson (it’s wildly inaccurate to the actual events that took place) but it’s a huge and impressive action blockbuster. Hot Fuzz. In movies, the police take part in endless shootouts and awesome car chases. In real life, as Edgar Wright’s Hot Fuzz hilariously points out, it’s mostly just boring paperwork. This contemporary comedy classic spends most of its running time making fun of conventional action movies but really, that’s all just laying the groundwork for an over- the- top finale full of hyperbolic gunplay and spectacular violence.

It’s a wonderful blend of violence and humor, and it’s one of the best action- comedies on record. The Crow. Few action movies are as full of rage as The Crow, a stylish 1. Alex Proyas and starring the late Brandon Lee, who died tragically on the set of this, his last and best film.

Lee plays a rock musician who is killed along with his fianc. It’s a stock storyline but the monster soundtrack, glorious imagery, and Lee’s unhinged performance bring out something especially human, a tale of vengeance that stems not from its pulpy plot but from its protagonist’s overwhelming pain. The Crow still soars. Everly. We’ve all heard of the “Die Hard in a . Salma Hayek stars in, essentially, “Die Hard in a Room.” She plays a kidnapping victim who finally turns on her attackers and holes up in a large apartment, fending off wave after wave of murderous assailants and becoming more powerful after each encounter. Joe Lynch’s clever and energetic low- budget action thriller is the sort of film that makes the most out of limited resources; Everly feels just as “big” as many movies that have ten times the budget. Fist of Legend. Jet Li has been making incredible kung fu movies for decades but one of his finest achievements is still Fist of Legend, a glorious remake of Bruce Lee’s influential action classic Fist of Fury (which was formerly released as The Chinese Connection).

In the film, Jet Li plays Chen Zhen, a Chinese martial arts student who goes to war with the Japanese oppressors who have killed his master and harassed his peers. Spectacular fight choreography and a story about overcoming racist bastards make Fist of Legend just as exciting and potent as ever. The Five Venoms (a. The Five Deadly Venoms)There are several classic 1. Netflix at the moment, and one of the best is The Five Venoms (sometimes released as The Five Deadly Venoms), which became one of the genre’s early breakout hits in America. It’s easy to see why. It’s a tale of mystery and persecution in which secret martial arts masters have infiltrated a Chinese community, and will stop at nothing to keep their conspiracies hidden.

The Five Venoms may not feature the wall- to- wall action some modern fans expect, but it compensates with a harrowing tale of martyrdom that eventually explodes into impressive choreography. The Killer. John Woo elevated the shoot- . Now he only kills to make enough money to pay for her operation, but along the way he runs afoul of a sinister crime boss and a cop who, begrudgingly, forms a macho rapport with his quarry. The Killer is an emotionally intense experience that also popularized a particularly balletic form of action movie violence which filmmakers are still copying today, and which made John Woo one of the most important action directors in history. Way of the Dragon. No list of great action movies would be complete without Bruce Lee.

Unfortunately, most of Lee’s greatest films are currently unavailable on Netflix, but his second- to- last finished film is still a treat. Bruce Lee stars in, wrote, and directed Way of the Dragon (aka Return of the Dragon), the tale of a martial arts master who travels to Italy to protect a family business from local gangsters, and who eventually squares off against a young Chuck Norris in the colosseum, in a fight to the death.

Way of the Dragon was Bruce Lee’s attempt to bring kung fu movies into the present day, and to find solutions to the practical problems of action filmmaking — problems like, what good is kung fu against enemies with guns? Bruce Lee found novel solutions to these obstacles, and proved he had the potential to — at least — recreate the whole action genre in his image.
